Island and county in S England. area 380 sq
km/147 sq mi towns Newport (administrative
headquarters), resorts: Ryde, Sandown,
Shanklin, Ventnor features the Needles, a
group of pointed chalk rocks up to 30 m/100
ft high in the sea to the W; the Solent, the
sea channel between Hampshire and the island
(including the anchorage of Spithead opposite
Portsmouth, used for naval reviews); Cowes,
venue of Regatta Week and headquarters of the
Royal Yacht Squadron; Osborne House, near
Cowes, a home of Queen Victoria, for whom it
was built 1845; Farringford, home of
Tennyson, near Freshwater products chiefly
agricultural; tourism is important population
(1987) 127,000 history called Vectis
(`separate division') by the Romans, who
conquered it AD 43. Charles I was imprisoned
1647-48 in Carisbrooke Castle, now ruined.
